Description
Evening primrose is a plant with yellow flowers native to North America. Its seeds are used to produce evening primrose oil. Evening Primrose Oil is a natural source of gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and pain-relieving effects. GLA is also a precursor to the prostaglandin E1 series, which plays an important role in supporting cellular health. According to WebMD (November 28, 2022) research suggests the GLA in evening primrose oil is essential for good skin health (acne, moisture retention, psoriasis, etc.), helps with premenstrual syndrome or PMS (including digestive issues, fatigue, irritability/depression, backache and/or breast tenderness), provides menopausal relief and helps with reduction in pain and inflammation for arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other pain.
This essential fatty acid plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy cell membranes in the brain and nervous system, which are important for overall brain function. Evening primrose oil can have anti-depressant properties when dosed correctly. Some studies suggest it can help improve mood, reduce irritability, and alleviate anxiety and can even help with ADHD and depression. Other research suggests these fatty acids might contribute to improved cognitive function and memory. Further, the Omega-6 fatty acids in evening primrose oil may lower blood pressure and regular use may help improve heart health.
Further, according to a Verywell Health, “Scientists studied evening primrose oil vs. placebo for multiple sclerosis (MS) in 52 participants over three months. They found that the treatment group improved pain, fatigue, and cognitive function compared with the placebo.”
